Happy Earth Day! {2010}

This is the only Earth we’ve got, as far as we know right now. Every day should be considered “Earth Day”, but it’s not, so here’s my obligatory “Earth Day” entry.
Some people get tired of constantly hearing “treat the Earth better”, but if people actually DID treat the Earth better, it wouldn’t be an issue that keeps getting thrown into people’s faces day after day. You’d think it would be common sense, but it’s not, because so many of us don’t follow these simple tips 100% of the time:
  • Use refillable mugs and bottles to reduce waste. {Starbucks recently gave away free coffee to all customers with a refillable mug, and Tim Hortons always gives $0.10 off of the purchase of a coffee with a refillable mug. However, this shouldn’t be the only reason you use one! They reduce significant amounts of waste, and keep your beverage warm so much longer! If 1,000,000 people do this, that’s 1,000,000 less pieces of garbage. Think about that before you say “one person can’t make a difference”.}
  • Buy items made from recycled materials whenever possible.
  • Buy local foods/items whenever possible.
  • Don’t litter. Period. Not only is it bad for the environment, but it makes your city look disgusting.
  • Recycle anything and everything you can. Clean dirty recyclable items first!
  • Donate items that are in good condition instead of throwing them away.
  • Take public transit/bike/walk/blade, instead of your car whenever possible.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We learned this in elementary school, yet we so easily forget.
  • This one is worth repeating:
Don’t litter today. Or any day for that matter…
Happy Earth Day!
