An Update!

Alright folks, it’s time to find some motivation… I’ve been slowly getting myself back into the kitchen, with most things being strongly influenced by health/fitness.
I promise (and I know I say this a lot) that I will be updating this soon! Somehow blogs take a backseat to everything else in life – especially when it’s just a blog for fun and not for anything else.

Anyways, there is one blog that I update daily – Vegan Fitness with Nikki – a blog exploring some stuff on fitness, food, and my journey through P90X. Determined to make it to day 90 this time around, I ramble on aimlessly about my ups and downs of the crazy fitness program, and hopefully offer some form of motivation to others who think they can’t actually DO P90X – because if I can get through it, anyone can. Seriously.

There WILL be more recipes posted here soon… But in the mean time, hop on over to my other blog OR come check me out on my Twitter account. I’m also up on Instagram! 🙂

Recipes Are Posted!

Hi everyone! Just want you all to know that I haven’t forgotten about this blog! I’ve been putting time into school, and my side-project for one of my classes: Vegan Fitness With Nikki

Here’s some of the recipes that I’ve posted there recently!

That’s just a taste of some of the recipes I’ve posted over there (hah, pun intended), so go check them out! 🙂

Have a great day everyone! 🙂

A Sister-Blog to Cook With Nikki

Check out the new blog I’ve started for a project in my Interactive Marketing class!

We were asked to create a blog about something we’re passionate about on the Blogger website, and since I’ve already got this blog as my baby, I decided to do something somewhat related, but with a twist! It’s still new, and still in the works… But I really like the direction it’s going in! 🙂

It puts a primary focus on:

  • Vegan/vegetarian foods
  • Fitness related entries
  • Reviews on random products focused on fitness and vegetarian/vegan food
  • My own personal progress with P90x
  • And there will also be some recipes thrown in because it’s impossible for me to have a blog without that!

Update Time! And… Video?

SO, life is CRAZY sometimes! I won’t even go into what’s been going on, but I will say this: life is fluid!

In about a week, I will be moved into my new apartment, which means I will have my own kitchen again. Which ALSO means that I will be back to posting yummy things in this little blog! 🙂

I’ve had a few readers suggest to me that I try video blogging. Now, I don’t really like being on video because, well… I’m awkward. Especially on camera. And I make mistakes when I cook. A lot. I’m also very new to editing videos… So things will be choppy for a while… But I’m going to try it! I’ll still post recipes, and pictures. But now, instead of having a whole paragraph of yapping away about some random story, you can click the play button and hear me tell the story instead. 😉 And maybe even watch the recipe take shape from start to tasty finish so that you can see how my things turn out!

I’m actually pretty excited about this. So for those of you who have been reading for a while, and those of you who are new to the page, welcome to the introduction of my “video blog” (for lack of a better name). 😉

PS: Be nice, I’m still new to this… 😉 There’s two videos because I haven’t figured out how to edit them together yet. Be patient. 😉 And excuse the horrible camera quality. There will be something better once I start actually posting recipes! 🙂

“Fat Tax” in Denmark – Interesting Article

Denmark has imposed a “fat tax” on fatty foods in an effort to convince Danes to
eat healthier. The tax is a complex one, in which rates will correspond with the
percentage of fat in a product. The value of the tax is about $3.00 for every
2.2 pounds of saturated fat.

This is one of the more interesting articles I’ve read in regards to a “fat tax”. I heard about this being in consideration a while ago, and thought it was an interesting idea… I know we all enjoy treats from time to time (sometimes more times than not), but this would be a great way to potentially curb people’s decisions on whether or not they purchase healthy foods. Can you imagine what it would be like if it were actually more expensive to buy the “cheap, easy, and unhealthy” foods that so many people buy? Can you imagine what it would be like if it were cheaper to  buy a bag of almonds instead of a bag of chocolate/candy?

A common excuse for why people don’t eat healthy is that it’s too damn expensive to do so. I like to argue this point with people, because since I started buying healthier foods, my grocery bills are quite lower… However; if there were a tax on foods that are unhealthy, potentially a tax high enough for people to truly notice the price difference (and a tax that was high enough to make the healthier options cheaper), then maybe North America wouldn’t have such a problem with obesity. I know people like their butter, and their burgers, and whatever else… But I believe this to be a great idea. I’m not saying that everyone who is larger in size should lose weight, but I do feel it’s a great idea to incentivize people to make the right decisions when it comes to eating for optimal health.

I wonder what everyone else thinks…

Happy Thankful Turkey (or Tofurkey) Day Everyone!

More recipes to come! But until then, here’s a funny commercial in honour of Thanksgiving! 🙂

Each time I watch this commercial, I laugh harder and harder… heeheehee… 😉

Visiting Carlo’s Bake Shop {From TLC’s Cake Boss}

Just follow the yellow brick PATH…

Okay… Maybe it’s not quite lined with yellow bricks {the PATH is actually a train that the husband and I took to get from Manhattan to Hoboken}, and Buddy isn’t the wizard {although he does work some magic with baked goods!}, but visiting the Cake Boss was easily an experience that was as awesome as the movie The Wizard of Oz. 😉

This is not a recipe related post, but what better place to mention the food and experience from this trip than here? This Canada Day long weekend, Joe and I decided to take a drive out to New York, and stay for a few nights. Knowing that we were a mere 15 minute train ride from Hoboken, I couldn’t help but insist that we visit Cake Boss. His show is one of my favourite things to watch, and he has been the biggest inspiration to me when it comes to baking and cake decorating. {I’m hoping that with a little more practice, my “house cake” will be up to “Cake Boss” standards! 😉 }Watching his show each week causes extreme drooling, and extreme urges to bake cakes. I know we’ve got plenty of amazing bakeries here in Toronto, but something about those cannolis just called out to me. {And I will admit, the hype is WELL deserved! There are some tasty treats there, people! The chocolate covered strawberries were so yummy, but I didn’t get a picture of them… 😉 Ate them too fast.} My goal was to at least get into the bakery, but I never imagined that I would have gotten to meet Buddy himself! I had hoped though… Let me share the story with pictures…

There is an actual street sign... Hard to miss... ;)

One of Buddy's sisters working at the counter, she was really nice too!The bakery was SUPER busy, as expected, and we only saw Buddy inside for a moment on the stairs. They were filming, so obviously a lot of running around was going on at the back. I saw a few other members of the cast, but wasn't quick enough with the camera...

Filming is taking place! That guy behind the crew's arm is Buddy, loading a cake into the truck... A few other people and myself stick around, and a girl from Montreal asks if he can come back out to take a few pictures. He says he'll be out in 2 minutes...

True to his word, he comes back out for some pictures! So I got to meet him, and got a picture with him! :) Easily one of the highlights of our long weekend trip to NYC {and mini-trip to Hoboken, NJ}!!! :)

I’m not normally the “ohmygoshI’msuchabigfan*crycrycry*” type of person when it comes to “famous people”, because really – they’re just people, and not all people are as special as they seem. But Buddy is not just a talented baker and cake decorator, he’s also an amazing artist. He has pretty much perfected the art of making stunning cakes. {Yes, I’ve seen Ace of Cakes, and they’re great too. But Buddy is still my favourite!} It was so great to meet him, and he’s a really friendly guy. The bakery is pretty awesome, too. It’s small, and obviously gets busy, but everyone working there seemed really nice and efficient.

I’ve read a lot of reviews where people complain about either the crowds, or about “rude workers”, and these reviews make me laugh. EVERY store/company/restaurant will have rude employees, or nice employees that are just having a bad day. It happens. Get over it. With the crowds, it’s to be expected in a place that’s on television. It’s so close to one of the hottest tourist spots, so if people are fans they’re obviously going to go and visit. Also, there are many local customers that buy baked goods from there. {So if you want to avoid crowds, visit the bakery at 7am when it opens, and go on a weekday.} If they WEREN’T busy, I’d be a bit worried… 😉 I’ve always believed that a sign of good quality food at a restaurant or bakery is a full house. So I will stress this point: Carlo’s Bake Shop lives up to the hype. 😉Note: I also got a picture with his mum, but it didn’t turn out too well…

A Date With Your Pooch: Woofstock Toronto 2010

One of my favourite things to do every weekend is a trip to the St.Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto. I wake up at the early hour of 4:30am, and leave my warm bed at 5am to arrive at the market for around 5:30am. {The Queen West street car runs 24 hours, and you can take it right to Queen and Jarvis, then just walk a few blocks right to the market.} During the spring and summer months, you can get some amazingly fresh foods in the North Market. However, this entry is not about shopping for food at the market, eating food or preparing food. This entry is about…

WOOFSTOCK!

This weekend, Saturday June 12th and Sunday June 13th, the St.Lawrence Market will be opening its doors to the furry community! No, not a group of hairy people… It’s for dogs!!!!! 🙂 {And their owners, of course…} Woofstock will be happening from 10am-6pm each day, and is free for all to join in the fun! I’m going to take my pooch, Buddy, out on a date to Woofstock this coming Saturday. If any of you are in the downtown Toronto area on either day, I encourage you to do the same! Our K9 companions give us love and loyalty on a daily basis, and don’t ask much from us in return. So take your best friend, bring your camera {*ahem* and some doggie bags and other supplies you may need…}, and enjoy the day devoted to dogs! This will be my first time attending Woofstock, and I couldn’t be more excited! If only Buddy knew what awaits him this weekend… 🙂

Have a great day everyone!
